Abstract:

The output of paper-confined cylinders of NITROGUANIDINE which varied in length from about 12to 12-inches, in diameter from one to three inches and in density from about 0.12 to 0.55 gmcc was measured. Results obtained formed the basis for tge design of a new test system for measuring the sensitivity of explosive. Pressure pulses are generated in the exposed sample by the detonation of long cylinders of cardboard-confined NITROGUANIDINE in end contact with the sample whose sensitivity is to be measured. The amplitudes of these signals are varied by control of the density to which the NITROGUANIDINE is packed, while shapes of the generated pressure-time signals are controlled by control of geometry. Development of the test system is described and results of tests of the direct-contact detonation sensitivity of high density pressed pellets of several explosives are presented. Author
