Abstract:
An analysis is presented of the operation of ruby and of neodymium glass in short pulse, high power laser application as a step toward a design concept for 0.1 microsec, 10 to the 7th power joule, 1100,000 radian optical radiation system. The device conceived consists of several separate identical oscillator-amplifier combinations operating mutually incoherently but individually coherent with a 10 cm aperture. Ruby is the selected laser material pumped with xenon flash lamps and arranged in a unique array geometry. Author
