This analysis considers two possible configurations for the achievement of a traveling-wave optical-maser LASER capable of providing 10 to the 7th power joule pulses in 10 to the -7th power sec with an angular divergence of 10 to the -5th power radians. It is shown that the traveling-wave optical-maser amplifier is the only practical approach. Scaling relations are developed that permit the initial examination of parameters affecting design for any optical-maser materials and any output energy. These relations are used to demonstrate that ruby should not be considered as an appropriate material for a very high energy system. It is shown that glasses, particularly when doped with the Neodymium ion are satisfactory at least at energy levels considered. A complete design theory is developed for the very high energy travelingwave optical-maser. This theory includes both time and spatially-dependent effects and predicts characteristic pulse shaping effects. Author
