Abstract:

For an effective weapon against targets at a distance, the following specifications have been tentatively established an energy density of 1000 joulessq cm, a range of 100 km, a beam divergence of 1100,000 rad, and a pulse length of 100 manoseconds. Prior to the development and construction of the above-mentioned weapon, it has been considered judicious to construct and test an intermediate scale model device capable of meeting the following specifications an energy output of 1000 to 10,000 joules, a pulse length of 100 nanosecond, and an angular divergence of 1100,000 rad. Further, at least 1000 joules over one square centimeter was desired to demonstrate the effectiveness of the device. Also, the half angle divergence may be in the order of 110,000 to 1100,000 radians. The laser materials to be considered were limited to ruby and neodymium glass. Author
