Abstract:
The 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyric acid compound was prepared by the sequence tetranitromethane TNM to nitroform to methyl 4,4,4-trinitrobutyrate IV to potassium methyl 4,4-dinitrobutyrate III to methyl 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyrate I to 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyric acid II. Process development in the KI reduction of IV to III is described. The aqueous fluorination technique is used to convert III to I. Over-all yields of II from TNM are 35-40. It is believed that this represents a practicable and economical method for the manufacture of II. Author
