The results of continuing investigations in programs for the Carbonization of Plastics, the Vapor Pressure of Refractory Materials and the Spectral Emissivity of Refractories are presented. Studies of thermal degradation of phenolic, epoxy, polyphenylene and polynaphthalene resins were made utilizing, the arc-image furnace, the fluidized bed reactor and the thermogravimetric analysis techniques. The effect of semicarbonized materials used as fillers were studied and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer was adapted to the study of transient and stable species resulting from the flash-photolysed degradation of plastics. Vapor pressure studies were conducted using the Langmuir evaporation technique, the matrix isolation method, and resonance line absorption spectroscopy. Rates of evaporation of tungsten carbides, hafnium carbide, titanium carbide and zirconium carbide were made. Author, modified-PL.
