Abstract:

The analysis includes a study of propagation methods for possible use in the submillimeter wavelength region 1.0 to 0.1 mm of the electromagnetic spectrum. The more promising among these trough waveguide, overszed waveguide and Fresnel region propagation using Fresnel zone plates are given a more comprehensive analytical treatment. Recommendations are given for some designs which would appear to have the highest probability for success. A measurement system consisting of a harmonic generator signal source and a harmonic-mixing superheterodyne receiver was built which was used for data taking at 210, 280, 350, and 420 Gc. The fundamental signals for harmonic generation and mixing were obtained from 70 Gc klystrons. An AFC system was developed to hold the frequency of the second. The theory and instrumentation of the system is presented with some data taken on standard and oversized rectangular waveguides.
