This report includes waveform identification using digital techniques, by Edward J. Farrell. 2 Oct 62 Rept. no. EF 2459-35A systems design study of a digital correlator for waveform recognition purposes has produced a practical design for hardware implementation of waveform classification as outlined in the original contract. Two approaches to the correlation problem, referred to as the sum-of products and the least-squared- difference methods, were investigated. With appropriate normalization the sum- of-products method and the least-squared-difference method can both be used for target classification. Latter method has following advantages over former more economical to implement, less time required to identify a given return, compensation for changes in the noise level and for certain a priori information, and analytical justification. Comparisons are made of several designs based upon the different parameters.
