Abstract:

The first quarter of a one year program to develop improved ceramic to metal seals for use in thermionic converters is reported. The objective of this program is to develop seals which are capable of long life at 1500 C in cesium and vacuum environments, and to extend the sealing techniques developed to materials which are capable of long life at temperatures in excess of 1500 C. The project was divided as follows development of seals between high purity alumina and molybdenum development of ceramic-metal composite materials from which converter envelopes can be fabricated with controlled gradiation of composition throughout the envelope body study of refractory materials, analysis of materials systems occurring in seal areas, and optimization of particular characteristics of material systems utilized and study of material systems.
