Abstract:

The design and feasibility testing of a flighttermination device containing a minimum explosive charge are described. The philosophy of the device is to destroy the structural integrity of the wing on one side of an aircraft by cutting the main wing spar, thereby causing the aircraft to spin down to earth in a relatively predictableAREA. The device, containing an 8.2-lb explosive charge, was tested on a wrecked Navy F9F aircraft and proved to be even more effective than anticipated. Author
