Abstract:

Results from model and full-scale observations and measurements indicate that serious transverse hull vibrations are induced by bow antipitching fins. The vibrations are believed to be caused by hydrodynamic impacts due to flow separation effects that occur for large amplitudes of fin motion. Model experiments of various fin configurations were conducted in waves to determine the effects of changes in fin shape, orientation,AND DEPTH OF SUBMERGENCE ON VIBRATIONS AND PITCHING. Minimum vibrations were obtained for fins with high aspect ratios, tip fences, and deep submergence. Author
