Abstract:

ROMATIC NITRO COMPOUNDS, USEFUL AS CATHODES IN BATTERIES, WER REDUCED AT A LOW-RATE BY USING MERCURY CATHODE IN ACID LIQUID AMMONIA SOLUTIONS. The resultant data provide a reaction scheme for nitrobenzene in acid liquid ammonia. The end product of this r duc ion is phenylhydroxylamine. For nitroso-, azoxy-, or azobenzene the end product is hydrazobenzene. Analogously m-bis- ydroxylamino benzene is the end product of re uction of m-dini robenzene. Substitue ts were found to influence markedly the path and end products of reduction. Contrasted to m-dinitrobenzene, the ortho and para compounds are completely reduced to he amine . This me hod of low-rate reduction, as used to establish the reaction schem , is also believed to be a practical method of screening aromatic nitro compounds for use as cathodes in batteries. Author
