Abstract:

A design study is made of an operable hydrogengenerating plant based on the steam reforming of methanol, and intended as a source of hydrogen for fuel cells to be used in submarine propulsion. The plant is designed to supply up to 70 pounds per hour of pure hydrogen and is optimized on the basis of minimum volume, weight, and oxygen consumption. The hydrogen-generating equipment designed has a volume of about 105 cubic feet, occupies a 420-cubic foot space in the submarine, and weighs approximately 8,360 pounds. For ten days of continuous operation at normal capacity 20 pounds of hydrogen per hour, 9,630 pounds of oxygen are required for combustion purposes, while about 31,280 pounds of methanol are required as feed and auxiliary fuel. th ir volumes are 139 cbic feet and 634 cubic feet, respectively. Response time of the system to a change in demand from minimum to maximum hydrogen production is about 1 12 minutes. Author
