Abstract:

The general problem of thin cylinders is analyzed with various end conditions for the roationally symmetric motions caused by the passage of a pressure front of constant velocity along the axis of the cylinder. The method of Virtual Work is applied to a generatrix of the cylinder, which is then treated as a beam on an eastic foundation with various end conditions. The results are presented in terms of three radial deflection components a bending deflections, b rigid body transltions, and c rigid body rotations. The resulting equations for the many cases considered and for particular end conditions are presented in tabular form. Author
