Abstract:

Research on the fluorine phase of the program has continued to be directed toward perfluoropolyaromatic structures, such as the perfluoropolyphenyl ethers, as the eventual goal for highly thermally stable base stock fluids. Three approaches to these systems are under investigation 1 the stepwise synthesis of dibromotetrafluorobenzenes as difunctional building blocks, 2 the CoF3 fluorination process, and 3 the Simons cell route to C6F6. Under the non-fluorine phase of the program, several new compounds were prepared and eleven tested for thermal stability. 2,4,5-Triphenylthiazole showed the greatest stability 897 F. None of the heterocyclic compounds containing boron were exceptionally stable, o-phenylene-pphenoxyphenylboronate decomposing at 858 F. Author
