Abstract:

I ENTIFIERS Tiros I. Comparisons of TIROS I pictures and simultaneous ground observations or aerial photography of clouds were made to prepare guides to cloud interpretation from satellite pictures. These are based on the form, pattern, texture, structure, brightness, and dimensions of the patterns and shapes of the images. Factors affecting cloud brightness and the problems of measuring brightness are briefly discussed. The guides provide clues for determining the cloud amount, cloud genera, and mesoscale cloud and ground patterns. Representative pictures accompany the guides. The significance of some of the mesoscale patterns is discussed and suggestions are made for the use of routine cloud reflectivity contouring. A selection of TIROS pictures from which the guides were prepared, rectifications, and abbreviated synoptic maps for background information are shown and discussed in an Appendix. Appropriate surface reports have been added to the pictures and, in some cases, a companying aerial photographs from a U-2 aircraft are included. Author
