The effect of characteristic impedance on explosion-generated strain or particle motion pulses is greater than the effect predicted from plane wave acoustic theory. An empirical method of computing the stresses in rock generated by the detonation of an explosive charge has been presented and results agree with theoretical stresses derived from Hugoniot equation of state data. The relative attenuation of displacement, particle velocity, and acceleration as determined empirically agrees with theoretical predictions. More Hugoniot data for the granite and the explosives used should provide additional comparisons. Planned investigations in tuff will permit comparisons over a greater range of characteristic impedance ratios. Author
