Abstract:

An electron beam focused by an axial magnetic field and subjected to a transverse high-frequency electric field has been used to produce power output at harmonic frequencies of the transverse electric field. The re ulting rotating electron beam contains a slow and a fast cyclotron wave, and the fast wave interacts with a harmonic coupler to provide output at a frequency that is a multiple o the input microwave frequency. The resulting frequency multiplier has been investigated, and an analysis is provided of the effects of finite beam diameter, and of the efficiency of coupling of the electrons to both the input and the output couplers. A study f interaction circuits is provided and attention is given to limitations on interaction efficiency, including relativistic effects. A practical multiplier design is de cribed and results of experimental work show that the basic theory is reasonably well confirmed in the conversion from X-band to K-band. 9author
