Abstract:

The operating characteristics of condensing vapor self-acting journal bearings were investigated analytically and a steam bearing experiment was initiated. Thermohydrodynamic considerations suggest the isothermal equilibrium behavior of the lubricant. Linearized ph analyses are carried out for an infinite and a finite heat transfer model. For the infinite length isothermal full plain journal bearing with constant lubricant mass the condensing vapor operation results in a bearing pressure limit at the saturation vapor pressure value. The load capacity of the condensing vapor bearing is correspondingly reduced below that of the non-condensing bearing.
