Abstract:
The development of flexible, solid propellant rocket motor case insulation is discussed. Data are presented for insulation based primarily on butadienestyrene and butadieneacrylonitrile copolymers. The oxyacetylene torch test currently being standardized by the Flame Ablation Test Group of Section III-L of ASTM Committee D-20 was the principle screening tool used in the study. Vulcanizates were compounded using a variety of fillers and filler combinations including salts, resins and fr, heat capacity and their known ability to reinforce rubber. As a result of these studies, a material was developed which static motor tests show to have promise as a flexible material for case insulation. This material was based on a butadieneacrylonitrile-phenol furfural-asbestos composition. Other promising materials which are reported are based on two types of liquid butadienestyrene cbers. The selection of these fillers was based on such properties as heat stability, ability to form char, heat capacity and their known ability to reinforce rubber. As a result of these studies, a material was developed which static motor tests show to have promise as a flexible material for case insulation. This material was based on a butadieneacrylonitrile-phenol furfural-asbestos composition. Other promising materials which are reported are based on two types of liquid butadienestyrene copolymers and a butadieneacrylonitrile-polyvinyl chloride blend.
