Abstract:

A SOLO tracking unit was obtained by Frankford Arsenal from Chicago Aerial Industries Inc. for flight test evaluation. SOLO, derived from Selective Optical Lock-On, is an automatic passive tracking technique which is dependent upon the light gradient contrast of the target for performance. The demonstration model of SOLO was installed and tested in an HU-1 helicopter by Frankford Arsenal personnel. The tests were conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground through September and mid October 1961. The results of these tests indicated that this demonstration model of SOLO would generally track to a 3 mil radial maximum error on such targets as tanks, jeeps, helicopters in flight, personnel carriers, shrubbery and tress. A film, covering the flight program, was edited by Frankford Arsenal and serves as the principal means of indicating tracking performance. Author
