Abstract:

An analytical study of the influence of thermal diffusion on steady laminar boundary-layer flow of binary gaseous mixtures past a semi-infinite flat plate is reported. The Soret-Dufour effectsARE EVALUATED FOR He-air and H-air mixtures taking into account the influence of free-stream Mach number, free-stream concentration and temperature. The results obtained belong to the well known class of similar solutions. In all cases the plate is assumed to be in thermodynamic equilibrium and without mass absorption or release into the fluid. The results may therefore be interpreted as generalized solutions to the recovery problem. The effect of diffusion on the thermal recovery fact r is found to be within 0.5 and 1 for He-air and H-air mixtures near sonic velocity. It increases to 13 for H-air mixtures at a Mach number 10.
