Abstract:

The discharge arc loss and recovery time of a typical S-band encapsulated window was measured as a function of transverse magnetic field for varying fill pressures of spectroscopically pure argon. These measurements were made at a peak power of 125 kilowatts, a three microsecond pulse width, and a 0.001 duty cycle. The D.C. magnetic field was placed perpendicular to the narrow sides of the waveguide and therefore perpendicular to the microwave electric field. Reductions in both discharge arc loss and recovery time were observed due to the magnetic field. A magnetic field duplexer window, using quartz cylinders, was developed. This window has the desired 7 bandwidth at 2800 Mc and the low level insertion loss was less than 0.1 db. The window will handle at least 10 megawatts peak - 10 kilowatts average under the specified duplexer conditions. Author
