Abstract:

The physics of surface phenomena on metals under ultra high vacuum conditions or in controlled pure gas atmospheres of argon, xenon, oxygen and nitrogen were studied. A bakeable mass spectrometer was designed and built specifically for this purpose. An investigation was made of the mechanisms of sputtering, evaporation and desorption from molybdenum, tantalum, platinum and copper. Additional information was obtained on electron emission phenomena from zirconium and some of its alloys with the field emission microscope. Author
