Abstract:

Metabolic characteristics of a normal and a paralyzed mutant strain of Chlamydomonas were compared. Growth rates were alike in both strains. The division of these strains of Chlamydomonas became synchronized under a regimen of alternating light and dark 12 hours each. Characteristics of the paralyzed mutant were identical with the wild type. Despite the sensitivity of the motility of this organism to reagents which inhibit aerobic respiration, the wild type organisms were found to swim for up to four hours after being placed in a chamber made anaerobic with alkaline pyrogallol. The data indicate that both strains of Chlamydomonas are virtually identical in these characteristics of growth, synchronization, excretion products and endogenous respiration. Author
