Abstract:
Research employing a digital computer is being conducted on large-angle motions, including poststall gyrations, which occur on operational aircraft and which will probably continue to occur on some of the aircraft of the future. Illustrations of post-stall gyrations which have occurred on aircraft are given and analytical methods being used at the Langley Research Center in pertinent studies are described. These methods use suitable equations of motion and non-linear aerodynamics. Results obtained are correlated with small dynamic model test results, and then may be extrapolated to account for effects of full-scale Reynolds number, altitudes and Mach number. In addition, attempts are made to accumulate basic information that will be of aid to designers. Some typical results are presented which illustrate use of the analytical methods. Author
