Abstract:

This is the first of a series of four reports presenting findings from a small-scale model study of the structural behavior of prestressed concrete pavements. Purpose of the over-all study was development of load-moment relationships for both elastic and elasto-plastic conditions of loading, and the application of these relationships to formulation of a rational approach to the design and evaluation of prestressed airfield pavements. In part I, physical properties of the model are given as are techniques used in designing, constructing and instrumenting both pre-tensioned and posttensioned prestressed slabs. Results of exploratory tests on pre-tensioned model slabs are discussed and analyzed. Author
