Abstract:

This report describes the continuation of work on fuel cell systems. Major effort was devoted to the system employing chlorine as oxidant, phosphorus trichloride as fuel, and methyl thiocyanate as solvent. Studies were made of the suitability of other organic solvents, preparation of electrodes, photolytic regeneration of cell reaction products, and the operation of test cells to confirm cell characteristics experimentally. A thermodynamic evaluation was made of the maximum theoretical efficiency of regenerative fuel cells such a those involving phosphorus trichloride and chlorine. The fundamental studies of mechanisms and kinetics of reactions at electrodes were begun, using chronopotentiometry as the major initial technique. Author
