The need for a thermal design evaluation specification has been demonstrated and some basic thermal evaluation parameters derived and discussed. A thermal design index definition has been suggested together with methods of presenting thermal performance limit data and various supplementary evaluation factors. A test program was carried out to verify the basic data acquisition and presentation techniques. Tests on four different airborne electronic equipments provided sufficient data to establish the validity of the recommended methods. The proposed thermal design evaluation specification is submitted. It presents the procedures and techniques discussed herein. This specification provides sufficient background data, detailed procedures and information to conduct and document a complete thermal evaluation program for a piece of airborne electronic equipment. There is no final absolute thermal evaluation scale for electronic equipment. Too many variables are involved in selection of the equipment design. This in no way, however, obviates the need to measure the effectiveness of the thermal design in terms of the equipment performance and resultant aircraft penalty. The factors discussed herein provide a basis for a detailed survey of the thermal design of an electronic equipment. Author
