Abstract:

This article is a cross between technical exposition and science fiction. It is a far-out answer to the question, What will the research we are doing eventually enable us to do. Moreover, it is a special mode of research communication. The fictional vein of presentation of technical ideas has some advantages which are worthy of serious consideration, and this article attempts to demonstrate these advantages. To better appreciate these advantages one has to think about a communicative problem which has intensified with the growth of science the problem of cultivating and maintaining an awareness of important technical ideas. This is particularly a problem in the field of computer applications. In the technological world which absorbs the products of research and development, progress may actually be a great deal slower than it could be, simply because key people are not sufficiently aware of the possibilities of computers. The problem is to present technical ideas which are not only sound and reasonable, but which are unforgettable. Author
