Abstract:
A gas gun system for use in studying one-dimensional spall conditions in thin metal plates is described. This gun is capable of producing well controlled plane impact of a missile-disc 1.69 in. in diam on a target-disc of adjustable diam at velocities up to 150 msec. Missile and target thicknesses can be varied as required in the experiments. The system has been applied to determine minimum conditions to produce spall in Cu. It is condluced that spall and the nature in which it forms as functions of impact conditions, depend principally on the material form i.e., bar or plate. The material condition i.e., annealed, 14-hard or hard was found to have a relatively small effect.
