Abstract:
The equations governing the flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle of a gas in which many simultaeous elementary reactions occur are set down in general form suitable for numerical solution. The technique of solution on a high-speed computing machine is discussed. Results for a specific example, in which the flow of agas undergoing four reactions amongst the species CO, CO2, H2, H20, H, and OH is calculated in the divergent portion of a nozzle, are presented. Various solutions are given with variations in the indivual rate constants so as to show the importance of the different steps. It is shown that the slower recombination reactions of H and OH dominate the chemical influence on the gross flow. All four of the reactions freeze relatively early in the flow history, and it is shown how the Bray method J. of Fluid Mech., 61, 1959 can be applied to find the separate freezing points of the elementary reactions in a complex kinetic case.
