Abstract:

Th r sul of exp riments carried out at a number of laboratories to determine the effects of proton and electron irradiation on the perform nce of sol r c ll r su ari O T OF THE STUDIES WERE CONCERNED WITH SILICON CELLS WHICH UTILIZE A P-N JUNCTION CLOSE TO THE SURFACE ALTHOUGH, SOME PRELIMINARY R ULTS FOR G OL R CELL AL O R I CLUDED. The results of many laboratories are compared in a phi sub c vs E sub p plot, where phi sub c is the integrated proton flux require to reduce the efficiency of the silicon solar cell by 25 under conditions of approximately 100 mwsq cm artificial illumination, and E sub p is the proton energy T e r n suggests that the expected proportionality between phi sub c and E sub p holds for energies up to about 200 Mev or higher. The eff ct of r di io d ge on p c r l r po e re also discussed and the experiments interpreted in terms of radiation-damage theory, where possible. Author
