Abstract:

The surface sensitive mechanical behavior of ionic crystals can be broadly understood in terms of the effects of surface sources of dislocations, surface contaminants, and surface defects. These three factors, the extreme notch sensitivity of ionic crystals, and the results of some recent investigations performed mainly on NaCl, LiF and MgO crystals are discussed in connection with Roscoe, Rebinder and Joffe phenomena.
