Abstract:

The influence of preliminary irradiation with X-rays on the rate of the ermal d composition of barium azi e was studied as function of decomposition temp rature and length of pr li inary irra iation. Relations ips were found between the value of the induction period and the length of the preliminary irradiation. Acceleratio of the reac ion is replaced by deceleration after prolonged irr diation. The effect of irr diation is only negligibly weakened with time. Heating of the irradiated salt at a temperature close to the experimental temperature leads to acceleration of the reaction. A moist preparation of BaN6 decomposes mor slowly, and a smaller effect of preliminary irradi tion is characteristic of it. An effect analogous to that caused by preliminary irradiation is produced by brief heating of the nonirradiate salt at the experimental temperature. Prolonged storage of the nonirradiated salt leads to an acceleration of the reaction. It was established that the total activ tion energy of he therm l decomposition of b riu azide decre es after - REACTION.
