Abstract:

The work and re ults of a study program, Operations Research on Recognition, are reviewed. An expository discussion of the methods of statistical decision theory, as applied to the steadystat recognition problem, is presented. An example, designed to illustrate the application of these methods, is discussed in detail, thereby elinea ing some of the impact of practical operational constraints on a recognition decision scheme. The organization of the flow of data in the general recognition device operating in an action-selection environment is considered. Decision and data-flow diagrams for the major elements and several ancillary eleme ts of a gener l recognition device are given. Conclusions and recommendations for further efforts are presented, and some estimates are given for the ultimate performance of multiple-stage linear search mechanisms. Author
