The instrument operates on the ratio-recording system in which the energy through the sample is balanced against that in a reference beam. The spectrometer slits are servo-operated to maintain constant reference beam energy. The wavelength ranges over which the instrument operates are 2 micro s to 4.5 microns and 4.5 micro s to 13 microns, and the accuracy of the transmission measurements is 1 of full-scale deflection. The in trument was primarily inten ed for a program of measurements of the variation of emissivity and transmissivity of IR optical materials over t e temperature range from room temperature to 800 C. An absorption furnace, for sample heating, was d signed to be used in conjunction with the spectrometer.
