Abstract:
Three high altitude balloon flights were conducted from Fort Churchill, Manitoba, to investigate the energy spectrum of primary cosmic ray protons in the region from 70 to 400 Mev. This energy interval, for which little detailed data exist, is of particular interest in connection with the proposed mechanisms to account for the modulation of galactic cosmic ray particles by solar phenomena. Also, in this region of energy, frequent emission of solar particles occurs and the determination of their energy distribution and the change of their intensity with time, following a solar outburst, yields valuable information of 1 the solar acceleration mechanism, and 2 the electromagnetic conditions in interplanetary space during the solar event.
