Abstract:

The performance of Cs vapor thermionic cells employing carbide emitters was studied. Vacuum emission measurements were made on a series of samples consisting of polycarbides of U and Zr. Certain carbide samples were incorporated into Cs cells and studies were made of the electrical output characteristics. Results indicated that the cells operate in a discharge mode for Cs pressures exceeding 0.1 mm Hg and that maximum power output decreases linearly as the interelectrode spacing increases.
