Abstract:

A technique is presented for determining the reliability of solenoid valves. It is believed this effort was a step toward the prediction of the reliability of mechanical and electromechanical devices. However, a detailed empirical analysis should be performed in the near future either to refute or substantiate the theoretical modes of failure analysis as well as the theoretical prediction technique presented. The present effort did not include this highly desirable aspect because of time limitations. It is pointed out that an empirical analysis should include considerations such as the effects of vacuum conditions, temperature, wear compatibility between unlike materials, and stress concentration between seat and poppet.
