Abstract:
The applicability and limitations of various methods are investigated for computing amplitudes of torsional vibration in which engine damping is of primary importance. The investigation is limited to the direct-connected enginegenerator type of internal-combustion installations. A generally poor correlation was found to exist between amplitudes of torsional vibration calculated by means of seventeen available formulae, and amplitudes determined by tests. Arbitrarily safer amplitude forecasts are possible if existing formulae are modified by introducing statistically determined coefficients. A new empirical formula, statistically evolved from test data, indicates a much improved reliability and accuracy of amplitude and maximum stress predictions. Author
