Abstract:

Developments since the aircraft feasibility experiments of 1959-60 are summarized. Materials and assembly techniques were developed which have been functionally tested and are considered likely to prove serviceable. Light weight laminated plastic structures have been developed which will contain the back blast. Additional safety tests are reported. It is concluded that materials and techniques are available in experimental quantities for aircraft capsule Linear Shaped Charge LSC separation systems which, subject to MIL-D-21625 qualification, are of a serviceable type. Blast effects and fragment damage, considered acceptable in the frame of reference of the F8U-1 feasibility tests, have been further reduced through the development of a laminar backup structure.
