Abstract:

The effect of administration of 9-alphaflurohydrocortisone on the establishment and maintenance of the staphylococcal nasal carrier state in soldiers undergoing chronic exposure to heat were investigated. The chronic exposure of a group of soldiers to heat while receiving a mineralocorticoid did not produce any unexpected alterations in the nasal carriage of staphylococci. The changes in the carrier state experienced by a group of soldiers serving as controls were similar to those reported for soldiers undergoing the artificial heat acclimatization process. The results suggest that 9-alpha- flurohydrocortisone in the dosage used does not alter the normal patterns of establishment and maintenance of the staphylococcal nasal carrier state in soldiers undergoing chronic exposure to heat.
