Abstract:

A new procedure was developed for the design of rigid pavements for roads and streets at military installations. The purpose was to provide greater flexibility in the design procedure to include the effects of vehicle loading, vehicle type, wheel configuration, and volume off traffic. By expressing all types of vehicular traffic in terms of an equivalent number of applications of an 18,000 pound load on a single axle equipped with dual wheels, the variables in determining the required pavement thickness are produced to the total number of load applications, the flexural strength of the concrete, and the modulus of subgrade reaction. Develop ent of the design procedure is described in detail. Application of the method to the design of military roads and streets is illustrated by example. Author
