Abstract:

Electromechanical gyrators were developed over the frequency range from 375 c to 1.1 mc using coupled piezoelectric and piezomagnetic transducers in two designs. Over most of this range, bandwidths of 1 to 3.7 were obtained with power insertion losses bel w 2 db. Single frequency neutralization, by the addition of an inductor or capacitor, yielded isolators with 1 to 2 db power insertion loss in the pass direction and a narrow band of high rejection in the stop direction. By cascading a phase shifter with the EM gyrator and then neutralizing the combination with a parallel resistor, a stop bandwidth comparable to the gyrator pass bandwidth is obtained without adversely affecting the pass direction characteristics. Hall effect gyrators have been fabricated using indium antimonide plates with from 4 to 32 terminals. As expected, efficiency increases with increasing numbers of terminals. Author
