Abstract:

Radiative heating of hypersonic objects becomes a significant contributor to the over-all heat tra fer a r - ntry veloci ie in excess of 25,000 ftsec. The radiation from the equilibrium gas cap behind the bow shock wave is in general the major contributor to this heating, but ppreciable luminous front radiation is also associated with the non-e uilibrium region immediately behind strong normal shock waves. A brief review is presented of the published information on radiative heating at 25,000 ftsec. In addition, the problem of calculating the radiation from the non-equilibrium region at higher velocities i iscussed, and some recent experimental measurements for two molecular band systems are present . Finally, the expected intensity level of non-equilibrium radiation at 35,000 ftsec is compared with the stagnation point heating caused by radiation from the equilibrium gas and by laminar aerodynamic heat transfer.
