A method for the testing of aerodynamic decelerators utilizing a ground launch technique was developed. Suitable test equipment and launch hardware was selected. Test methods and procedures were established. Test missiles capable of over water operation were designed and fabricated. A field test program consisting of five missions was performed over a test regime of altitudes between 25,000 and 70,000 feet and Mach numbers from 1.1 to 1.83. A shaped parachute canopy in the form of a hemispherical ribbon type with 10 extensions Hemisflo was found to perform satisfactorily at a Mach number of 1.83.
