Abstract:

Ingots of W-3 Mo alloy were arc-melted by various electrode preparation techniques, melt rates and crucible sizes to optimize as-cast ingot quality. Ingots were evaluated for purity, soundness, structure and sidewall cleanup. Preliminary extrusions were made with two 6.55-in.-diam. billets at 2.81 reduction ratio and 3.725-in.-diam. billets at 111 and 171 reduction ratios at temperature above 3500F. Extrusion equipment and accessory tooling is discussed. Fine grained, low interstitial ingots were obtainable by blending, isostatic pressing to 1 to 2.5-in.-diam. rods, hydrogen sintering, mechanically joining and single arc-melting with dc straight polarity at a melt rate of less than 2 lbmin with magnetic stirring coil reversal.
