Research was carried out into the behaviour of twisted continuous filament yarns as they are subjected to repeated cyclic stresses. A fatigue tester designed to give a constant extension stroke to a yarn mounted between two jaws was constructed and results of measurements of the slack developed are presented. The occurrence of filament breakage during the course of a test was found to be far more pronounced in the case of low twist yarns than in more heavily twisted yarns. Extension cycling and load cycling tests on the Instron tensile tester are included. Apparatus was constructed to investigate the recovery of yarns from a predetermined static strain and a few results are given. The design of a more versatile fatigue tester employing a larger number of yarn stations is under consideration and is discussed briefly.
