Abstract:

Two possible methods of measuring arc jet plasma were investigated. The steady-state arc method leads to erroneous results due to deposits on the walls of the plasma container. The pos ibility of measuring the decay time of the plasma also was investigated. The method requires a switching on the order of 10 to the -10th power sec for a 1-mhocm plasma. The exploded wire propulsion device was set up and instrumented. Closed-cycle magnetohydrodynamic vortex generator studies show that the specific power of the system will be much greater than that of a conventional turbogenerator for power levels on the order of 50 kw and greater. Possible containing and insulating materials, as well as working fluids, were investigated and feasible combinations obtained. Preliminary experiments were designed to evaluate the proposed configurations.
